Single-horned Asiatic rhinoceroses seen from elephant's back
in
Chitwan National Park, Southern Nepal. The Royal Chitwan National Park is situated at the foot of the Himalayas. It's one of the last undisturbed areas of the Terai region which used to extend over the foothills of India and Nepal. Using elephant is the best way to to watch the wildlife there: they can go in terrains men cannot go even in 4x4 or walking; they are quite and don't disturb the animals; and since they are neither preys or predators, all animals let them come close without paying much attention. The park has one of the last populations of single-horned Asiatic rhinoceros and is also among the last refuges for the Bengal tiger. You can also find there leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs, mongooses, Hispid hares, rhesus macaques, smooth-coated otters, jackals, striped hyenas, muntjacs, pangolins, wild boars, and many other species of mammals. Some of the rivers host Ganges river dolphins. There are 19 species of snakes in the park, including king cobra, Indian python, and monitor lizards. Chitwan is a Natural World Heritage site. |
