A little less than 1,200 coral islands grouped into 26 atolls make up the Republic of the Maldives, in the Indian Ocean. The highest altitude in the Maldives is 2.5 meters and 80% of the dry land is only 1 meter or less above sea level. Some projections have this country completely submerged before the end of the century, because of the raising level of the ocean due to global warming. The warming of the water temperature is already affecting the corals, like in the Seychelles. |
